Heavy FLOW - & other pagan rituals
Caught this band on their recent trek with Broken Water. They were pretty astounding. I didn't know what to expect from other bands playing with Broken Water, I kind of assumed they were going to be really noisy powerviolence with limited black and white jcard tape releases. Turns out Heavy FLOW was just a groovy bunch of girls doing their thing. They kind of sound like the Sandwitches to me, although with a little more darker edge that leaves things mysterious. It's weird, eerie but really familiar. I think another band that they remind me of is the Grifters, at least a little bit. They sound as though their jangly guitars are going to snap, no matter how twinkly or slow they are being strung. The bass is always threatening, kind of frightening at times, always grooving. The drums are always seemingly tapped on lightly, in a distance, carrying with it shadows and grooves. Of course the songs are sung and are hardly ever matched up in a perfect photocopied way. The vocals are twined together by emotion, and perhaps a good amount of practice. As a three piece they get their songs going. It's so good.
