Exotica is a music genre aligning itself with space-age and therefore lounge music. Martin Denny is the proclaimed father of Exotica, being one of the most, if not the most, popular acts of the genre (and of his time). Beginning with the piano and then moving onto various tropical/worldly instruments he gained throughout his travels in the Don Dean Orchestra, he made contacts and gained experience as an artist. Eventually he ended up in Hawaii though the culling of Don the Beachcomber and eventually formed his own band. He has described his Exotica sound as "window dressing, a background." And so it is. Each song takes you through a journey, you're driving through the congo or taking a boat through an amazon jungle river. Most of the Exotica sounds and themes are really misinterpretations, none of the environments they simulate are anything like their songs even Denny has stated that it's "a combination of the South Pacific and the Orient...what a lot of people imagined the islands to be like...it's pure fantasy though." But still, kudos for making such great music that is at once relaxing and full of journey.
