Black Metal is an incredibly erratic pigeonhole in music. I'm not a true black metal fan, but I have enjoyed Dark Throne and Mayhem and some newer suicidal stuff because it sounds pretty groovy to me, but ultimately I find that a lot of the bands that bring anti-progressive politics and have ethno-centric lyrics really bug me out and since the scene is full of that type of stuff I tend to avoid it like the plague. Anyways, Ättestupa's last.fm describes them as being cooky, weird, devoid of life and cold, frost bitten, dark, pure evil and other shit that every other black metal band has written themselves on their last.fm, which is surprising because last.fm is more of a nerd paradise than evil, frost bitten land of the internet. I guess the interesting twist on this group is that they seem to be more of a tight nit experimental band that uses Black Metal influences and not so much sound structure, they got that lo-fi quality that gives their aching instrumentals a dark tinge to it, nothing hateful, but obviously brooding and nihilistic. But the depth that the songs go into, in terms of just jamming out, really broaden the scope of what I figured Black Metal/Drone/Noise would sound like, but I'm going to be honest and say that the songs just end up sounding like the soundtrack to Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds ride. Anywho, I don't know how to describe this shit, it's just two 16+ minute songs that are pretty, like, uh, dope.
